Epoxy Polyurethane and UV Resin: Different Materials
Epoxy, polyurethane and UV-curable resins are different material systems.

On this page
Epoxy, polyurethane and UV-curable resins are different material systems. A project described simply as “resin craft” leaves out information you need before choosing tools, a workspace or a curing process.
Three names, different processes
Many casting epoxies and polyurethanes use separate components that react after mixing. Their ratios, working conditions and allowable casting sizes depend on the formulation. A UV-curable product instead needs a specified light exposure, but the word UV does not make every lamp or thickness suitable.
Do not transfer instructions between these families. Even two bottles sold as epoxy can be intended for very different jobs, such as a thin coating and a deeper casting.
Compare the actual product documents
Read both the technical data sheet and safety data sheet for the exact product. The technical sheet explains intended use and processing; the safety sheet explains hazards, exposure controls and other handling information.
Write down the product name beside each requirement. A note saying “resin takes one day” is not useful without the material, temperature and stage being described. Pot life, demold time and cure time answer different questions.
A figurine label tells only part of the story
A finished resin figure may be cast, printed, painted, assembled from several parts or combined with other materials. Its appearance alone cannot identify the chemistry underneath.
For a purchase, ask about construction, finish and care. For making, ask whether your exact material suits the intended dimensions and process. Those are separate decisions.
Start with a defined project
“A small decorative casting in a compatible mold” is a clearer brief than “something with resin.” Use it to check suitability with the manufacturer before purchasing equipment.
If your aim is simply to practice shaping a character, a clay-based project may involve a more suitable workflow for your available space. Choose the process deliberately rather than assuming all craft materials are interchangeable.
