How to Make a Color Swatch Board for Clay Projects
A swatch board is useful when it preserves the complete material combination, not just an attractive color.

A swatch board is useful when it preserves the complete material combination, not just an attractive color. Keep small samples that show what you actually used and how you processed them. Leave space for notes that will still make sense months later.
Give every sample an identifier
Write the clay line, color mixture and project reference. If space is limited, use a code that points to a notebook entry. Label before samples accumulate; several similar creams quickly become difficult to distinguish.
Separate raw references from cured samples so a visitor or future you cannot confuse their status.
Compare one variable at a time
Place an untreated cured sample beside the same clay with paint, and another with the proposed clear finish. Use comparable shapes and thicknesses where relevant. A different clay color beneath each coating makes the comparison harder to interpret.
Follow each product's instructions and record the sequence. Do not treat a quick dry-looking test as evidence for every long-term use.

View the board consistently
Compare samples on a neutral background under ordinary, consistent lighting. Turn the board to observe changes in reflection. A photograph can document the arrangement, but its color is affected by the camera and display.
Keep samples clean and avoid storing them where dust or sunlight alters the comparison unnecessarily.
Make the board useful for decisions
Add short observations: “too glossy for face,” “good jacket color,” or “tacky after this process.” Keep failed combinations clearly marked and separate from approved stock. A failed sample is valuable only if you know what failed.
Use the board before starting a new portrait or buying another finish. It can answer whether an existing combination already suits the project. Pair it with small-batch color mixing and the project notebook so appearance, recipe and process remain connected rather than becoming three unrelated collections.
