How to Make a Simple Clay Mug Accessory
A simple clay mug accessory can suggest a favorite drink without being a functional vessel.

A simple clay mug accessory can suggest a favorite drink without being a functional vessel. This beginner version uses a solid body, a shallow top indentation and a thick handle held close to the side.
Compare the handle with the body
Prepare one short cylinder and one thick curved handle portion. Make the top indentation shallow, then place the handle with both ends touching the side. Check that the handle does not look larger than the mug body when viewed beside the intended figure.
If the loop is too small to make without a thin weak connection, use a raised curved suggestion instead of forcing an opening. Give the first mug a plain surface. On a second attempt, add one broad color band while keeping the same body and handle proportions.
Form the body
Condition suitable polymer clay and shape a short broad cylinder on a compatible work tile. Flatten the bottom so it stands securely and keep the sides reasonably even.
With a blunt tool, make a shallow indentation at the top. Do not hollow the whole object or thin the rim excessively; the goal is a decorative miniature, not a usable cup.

Make a supported handle
Prepare a short thick curved piece and place it against the side, giving both ends broad contact. Keep the curve close to the body rather than extending it into a long delicate loop.
Follow the material manufacturer's joining guidance and blend the contacts gently. If a clear opening makes the handle too fragile at your chosen scale, simplify it into a raised curved suggestion instead.
Refine the silhouette
Check the mug from the front and side. Its handle should be proportionate to the cylinder, and the base should remain flat after the joining work.
A single contrasting band or dot can add character. Avoid long tiny text on the first attempt; the shape itself provides a clearer practice goal than miniature lettering.

Finish as a decorative prop
Follow the exact clay's curing and support instructions, using the baking checklist to organize preparation. Let it cool as directed before handling the small attachment.
The result is not intended for food or drink contact. If placing it with a character, plan how the prop will rest on the base or meet the hand with a supported connection.
Our accessory-planning guide explains why scale and pose matter together. A simple mug can communicate a familiar daily ritual without needing a miniature café scene around it.
