Good pet references show more than a cute expression. Clear views of body shape, ears, tail and coat markings help a custom figurine represent the animal you know.

Gather complementary views

Choose a face view, a side or three-quarter view and a whole-body photograph where possible. These images answer different questions, so three useful views are better than many nearly identical close-ups.

Keep the animal comfortable and use ordinary familiar surroundings. There is no need to force a difficult pose simply to match an imagined miniature composition.

Show distinctive markings

Photograph important patches or color transitions in even light. State which side they belong on, especially when a phone image may have been mirrored.

If the coat changes with grooming or age, identify the version you want represented. A recent short haircut and an older long-haired photo can otherwise produce conflicting instructions.

Choose the intended posture

A seated pose, a curled resting shape and a standing animal create different silhouettes and display footprints. Tell the maker which pose feels familiar and which parts may be simplified.

Thin tails, raised paws and delicate ears can require practical adjustments at small scale. Ask for a supported interpretation rather than assuming every action photograph can be reproduced literally.

Label extras separately

If you want a collar, tag, toy or bowl, provide its own reference and confirm whether it is included. Check whether tiny lettering can be read at the selected size.

For a person-and-pet group, review the relative sizes and visibility together. Our brick pet planning guide explains how these choices translate into a simplified construction.

Before submitting, open each file and check focus. A sharp eye-level view with clear markings gives the maker more useful information than a heavily filtered image with a dramatic background, even when the latter is your favorite social-media photograph.
