Why You Should Not Pick Up a Figure by Its Head

A figurine's head may look like a convenient handle, but it can place force on the neck, an assembly joint or a moving mechanism.

A figurine's head may look like a convenient handle, but it can place force on the neck, an assembly joint or a moving mechanism. Use the maker's recommended lifting points instead.

Understand the connection

The head may be attached separately from the body, and a bobblehead may include a spring or another mechanism. Appearance alone does not tell you how much handling force that connection can tolerate.

Even a fixed solid-looking figure can have a narrow neck or delicate finish. Do not test the joint by pulling or twisting it to find out how it was made.

Support the base and robust body areas

Clear the destination before lifting. Hold the figure according to its care instructions, keeping support beneath the base and avoiding pressure on projecting parts.

For a group or wide scene, consider the whole footprint and weight. Use both hands where appropriate rather than carrying it by one character or a decorative arch.

Avoid other tempting handles

Long hair, a hat, an instrument, a tail or an outstretched arm may be easier to reach than the base, but can be vulnerable to leverage. Move surrounding objects first if they obstruct safe access.

If the piece is inside a case, open the case fully or remove the cover as intended. Do not squeeze the figure through a restricted gap while gripping a delicate feature.

Respond to looseness calmly

Set the object down and photograph the connection if something feels loose. Keep detached parts safely together and ask the maker about repair before adding adhesive.

Our fragility guide explains why shape and assembly matter alongside material. A decorative character is not automatically designed for the handling associated with a toy.

Make safe lifting part of the display arrangement: leave room around the base and choose a shelf height you can reach comfortably. That simple habit reduces the temptation to grab whichever part is visible first.
