Polymer clay and oil-based modeling clay can both feel pliable, but that does not mean they serve the same purpose. Start with whether you want a permanent decorative object or a reusable sculpting study.

Read the intended use

Oven-bake polymer clay is shaped and then processed according to its curing instructions. Many oil-based modeling clays are intended to remain workable for repeated sculpting. Product names vary, so confirm the particular material rather than classifying it by touch alone.

Do not heat a reusable modeling clay in an attempt to turn it into a permanent figurine unless its maker explicitly provides that process.

Match the material to the exercise

A reusable material can suit practice in head proportions or changing a pose several times. You can remove the features and begin again without expecting the object to become a lasting gift.

For a finished display piece, choose a material and process intended to produce that result. If a reusable sculpt will become a mold master, research the compatibility of the exact clay and mold system separately.

Plan where the study will live

An unfinished reusable head needs protection from dust and accidental pressure. Keep it on a support in a labeled container. A visitor should not have to guess whether it is a finished object they can pick up.

Likewise, a raw polymer clay figure should remain clearly marked until its specified curing process is complete. A convincing surface does not prove that a material has been finished.

Keep the supplies separate

Label storage boxes and use clean tools between materials. Avoid returning mixed scraps to either original stock. Photograph useful practice studies before reworking them; this preserves the lesson without requiring every exercise to become a permanent collection.

If you are beginning with one small decorative project, the material comparison helps you choose a workflow. If the goal is only to improve face placement, a sequence of reusable studies may be more useful than repeatedly trying to finish and display every attempt.
